With deep sorrow and profound reverence, the Catholic Church mourns the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis. As the first pope from the Americas—born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina—Pope Francis was a historic and transformative figure. His papacy broke new ground with a pastoral heart, a bold voice for the marginalized, and a prophetic witness to the Gospel in our modern world.
Throughout his ministry, Pope Francis championed the cause of the poor, the sick, migrants, and the environment, reminding us all that "the name of God is mercy." He became a global symbol of humility and compassion, living out the spirit of his namesake, St. Francis of Assisi. From the very beginning of his papacy in 2013, he called the Church to go out to the peripheries, embracing simplicity, dialogue, and radical love.
The global Catholic community is united in grief and prayer. From cathedrals to village chapels, Masses are being offered, candles lit, and rosaries prayed. Catholics around the world are expressing both sorrow and gratitude for the gift of Pope Francis' life, his teachings, and his unwavering witness to Christ.
Funeral preparations are underway at the Vatican. Following tradition, Pope Francis' body will lie in state in St. Peter’s Basilica, allowing the faithful to pay their respects. The funeral Mass will be held in St. Peter’s Square, presided over by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, with heads of state and religious leaders from all over the world in attendance. The Vatican has announced that the funeral will take place on April 26 at 10 am, and all Catholic faithful are invited to unite spiritually during this solemn liturgy.
The Church now begins a time of mourning and discernment. The College of Cardinals will soon convene for a conclave to elect the next Bishop of Rome. As always, this sacred process will be guided by prayer, seeking the wisdom of the Holy Spirit to lead the Church into a new chapter of her mission.
In the words of Pope Francis himself, "Let us not allow ourselves to be robbed of hope." May his legacy continue to inspire and guide us. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. Amen.
